In Yamagata’s new pieces, antennas and ears protrude from sculptures and wall-based compositions, as if receiving and emitting transmissions across dimensions. These forms echo the video that lends the exhibition its title, in which a man questions whether his existence might be the dream of a snail and begins to construct a transdimensional telephone. Through her signature mix of hyperbolic colors, cartoon imagery, and tactile painterly-sculptural procedures, Yamagata creates a cast of characters and objects that seem to communicate across planes of reality.
Curated by João Mourão, Luís Silva, and Nuno Crespo, the exhibition is a collaboration between Escola das Artes and Kunsthalle Lissabon.
