"Carole Caroompas, who died in 2022, was better known on the West Coast than in New York. She lived in Los Angeles and was influenced by feminist and performance art, punk and pop culture. Her work reads like a raucous encounter between postmodern painting and the Pattern and Decoration movement. This show reintroduces her in New York.
Caroompas drew on a dizzying array of references: Heathcliff, the “Wuthering Heights” antihero; rock musicians like Iggy Pop; and the horror movie “Carrie,” to name a few. She mashed them up into commentaries on oppressive gender norms and the liberatory possibilities of transgression. But her messages are never straightforward."
