Wilhelm Sasnal at the Stedelijk Museum

Just announced by the Stedelijk Museum: Wilhelm Sasnal's upcoming solo exhibition at the museum to be on view from March 30 - September 1, 2024.

In this exhibition Wilhelm Sasnal (1972, Tarnów, Poland) takes cues from his new film project based on Swiss writer Robert Walser's novel The Assistant (1908), in which Joseph Marti, assistant to the engineer-inventor Carl Tobler becomes entangled in his bizarre world. In Sasnal's rendering of the novel, Marti's adventures become a parable of a contemporary life, in which flexibility became a new norm.

The show will feature a selection of paintings, drawings, texts, and film excerpts. Some of Sasnal's paintings for the new film, which interpret iconic modern masterpieces and lesser-known works, will be repainted for the exhibition. Additionally, new paintings will be created based on existing historical artworks, shown alongside recent works from 2021-2023.
