Marcel Odenbach awarded Wolfgang Hahn Prize

Marcel Odenbach (* 1953 in Cologne) will be awarded the Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2021 by the Society for Modern Art on November 16, 2021.

The award ceremony is always associated with a purchase for the collection of the Museum Ludwig. Thanks to Marcel Odenbach's generosity, the Society for Modern Art at the Museum Ludwig acquires its unique cutting templates for the Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2021.

The cutting templates were created over decades. They function as a continuous archive of images; At the same time, the 117 sheets in A3 format represent the artist's current working basis. Each sheet is dedicated to a topic. Odenbach arranges mentally or visually corresponding motifs that he has taken from magazines, brochures and many other sources. The collages are further processed and incorporated into new works in which the artist deals with social and political processes: constructions of gender and cultural identity, colonization, globalization. The way he works corresponds to his conceptual approach of finding, assembling, collaging and fading.

The cutting templates will be shown in an exhibition at the Museum Ludwig from November 17, 2021 to February 20, 2022. They have never been seen publicly before. As a basis for the artist's work, the cutting templates will be returned to Odenbach's studio after the exhibition, where they will continue to be available to him as image storage and archive on permanent loan.

“We consider ourselves extremely lucky to award Marcel Odenbach with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2021. Despite its great importance, it is still not as well known as it deserves to be. It is a special privilege to be able to buy his cutting templates for the collection of the Museum Ludwig. These are a central basis for his artistic work and of immeasurable ideal value. We are very grateful to Marcel Odenbach for his generosity, ”says Mayen Beckmann, CEO of the Society for Modern Art.

“We see it as a great sign of confidence that Marcel Odenbach leaves us with the cutting templates, perhaps his most personal work, which forms the essence of his artistic work. In my opinion, it is precisely the archives of artists that are central for access to their work. Odenbach's templates are also significant independent works, ”adds Yilmaz Dziewior, director of the Museum Ludwig.
