Press Release
April 19, 2017
Week one: January 31
Matthew Monahan
Monahan's fractured and embattled figures traverse through time and space, at once confronting us with something ancient and futuristic, earthbound and celestial, dreamlike and tactile, mythic and candid. This intrinsic dichotomy allows us to find ourselves in the ever-present hidden narrative each work possesses.
Week two: February 7
Georg Baselitz: A Selection of Works on Paper, 2006
In this rare group of works on paper, Georg Baselitz revisits seminal paintings from his early career. As in the contemporaneous Remix paintings, these drawings reference such works as Die große Nacht im Eimer, 1962-3, Der Neue Typ, 1965, and Die Mädchen von Olmo II, 1981. Several of the drawings relate directly to paintings in the current travelling exhibition The Heroes, which originated at the Staedel Museum, Frankfurt. It is currently on view at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and will travel to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C.
Week three: February 14
John Bock
Known for his performances, films and large sculptural installations, these three-dimensional objects — simultaneously collage, assemblage, architectural model and behavioral chart — address all the artist's major concerns with tracing the psycho-economic culture of daily life.
